As the weather cools and our skin adjusts, now is a great time to understand eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis. Whether it’s your first experience with the skin condition or you’ve had it before, you can learn how to treat it and keep flare-ups at bay.
Eczema is that itchy, dry, sometimes painful rash that can appear on one or more areas of the body. It typically begins with itching, which can develop into inflamed patches. The appearance of eczema can vary from person to person. Some people may notice dry, scaly patches, raw skin from scratching, or warm, swollen areas. On lighter skin, the rash often appears red, while on darker skin, it can resemble small, rough bumps or dark brown, purple, or gray patches. Some areas may even develop blisters that ooze or crust over.
Three main factors usually play a role. It could be your genes, since eczema tends to run in families. It could be your immune system, which sometimes overreacts and causes inflammation. Or it could be environmental factors — soaps, detergents, fragrances, or certain fabrics that irritate the skin and trigger flare-ups.
The good news? There are many effective ways to manage eczema. Regular bathing and moisturizing help protect your skin barrier. Your dermatologist may recommend gentle, fragrance-free products, wet wrap therapy (where bandages are applied over medicated or moisturized skin), and avoiding common triggers like stress or harsh detergents.
For long-term care, there are also highly effective, targeted treatments that can make a real difference. Non-steroid prescription creams such as Opzelura (ruxolitinib) target inflammation directly. Injectable medications like Dupixent (dupilumab) and Adbry (tralokinumab) work from the inside out to calm the immune system and help reduce flare-ups. Personally, we’ve seen how much these treatments can help patients get relief, regain comfort, and feel confident in their skin.
Eczema doesn’t have to be a hindrance in your skin care routine, especially as the weather changes. With the right treatment and support, you can maintain healthy, comfortable, and calm skin.
