Healthy Skin Starts with Less!

As we wrap up another year, I’m seeing more patients overwhelmed by competing skincare advice online. From viral routines to “miracle” ingredients, it’s never been harder to separate what truly benefits your skin from what trends on social media. My goal is always to bring you back to the basics, evidence-based care, consistency, and products that support your skin barrier rather than challenge it. Before we dive into what to leave behind in 2025, let’s reset the foundation of good dermatologic health together.
10-step skin care routines: This one continues to come up in medical appointments. It is still always better to keep it simple with a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Add in medications as prescribed or other products as recommended for targeted concerns.
At-home skin care devices to topical products that aren’t proven to work. There are lots of gimmicks out there that have great marketing, but they do not have the science or research to back up their claims. Before you take the leap and make that purchase, consult with me or do your own research to learn if it is a good option for you.
Beef tallow: There are many ways to moisturize your skin. This one can actually worsen your skin, causing acne or rashes. Choose a ceramide-based moisturizer instead.
Over-exfoliating: Exfoliating your skin too often can lead to irritation and dark marks. Oftentimes, less is more. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to skin care. Use of a gentle, chemical-based exfoliator, 1-3 days a week, over time can work wonders over time.
Skipping sunscreen in the winter: It is easy to do, and I am guilty of it. Even though we may not be feeling the warmth of the sun, we are still impacted by the ultraviolet rays from the sun and the screens we use daily. Continue to keep it in your regimen even on cloudy days.
This list could go on! If knowing what trends to leave behind is of interest to you, let me know. I will continue to share these tips.
The Doctor's Note!
2025 has been a year of the unexpected! As we prepare to slow down (hopefully) for the holiday season, take time to reflect on what served you, what you want to leave behind, and what you need more of in the year to come. For me, mentoring medical students and caring for patients has kept me going through the year. Creating community in my work gives me motivation daily. With webinars throughout the year and seeing you in clinic, virtual, and in-person, I am grateful that you trust me with your health and well-being. I hope to see more of you in the new year.
