Eczema (atopic dermatitis) can be frustrating. It is itchy, dry, and sometimes painful. However, there’s good news. Today’s treatments go far beyond traditional creams, offering faster and longer-lasting relief.
For eczema care, the goal is not only to reduce flares but to restore comfort and confidence.
Understanding Eczema
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes itchy, dry, red, or scaly skin. It can appear anywhere on the body.
What Causes Eczema?
1. Genetics – Eczema often runs in families. About 70% of people with eczema have a relative with eczema, asthma, or hay fever.
2. Immune System – An overactive immune response leads to inflammation and itching.
3. Environmental Triggers – Everyday irritants like soaps, detergents, fragrances, fabrics, allergens, and even stress or weather changes can worsen symptoms.
4. Other factors, such as race and location, may also influence risk. For example, studies show that Black children in the U.S. are twice as likely as white children to develop eczema, and people living in urban or dry climates may experience more frequent flares.
What’s New in Eczema Treatment:
1. Targeted Creams (Topical JAK Inhibitors)
New non-steroid prescription creams like Opzelura (ruxolitinib) target inflammation at the source. They act quickly to calm itching and redness—often within days—and can be used long-term with fewer side effects.
2. Biologic Therapies (Systemic Treatments)
Injectable medications such as Dupixent (dupilumab) and Adbry (tralokinumab) target specific immune signals that cause eczema flares. These biologics are FDA-approved for adults and children as young as 6 months and can significantly improve quality of life.
